We had such a great time! The team showed us how to open locks and handle the boat — we were total novices and felt completely prepared within an hour.

A week with the family on Balliol was absolutely wonderful. The canal was beautiful and Carys went above and beyond when we had a minor technical issue.

Keble kept me warm and toasty even when it unexpectedly snowed. A cosy, beautifully appointed little boat and a team who were friendly and incredibly helpful.

Clean, comfortable and so well equipped. The log burner in late October was a real treat. Carys and her team couldn't have done more to make our week special.

About College Cruisers

College Cruisers is a family-run narrowboat hire company based in the heart of Oxford, operating from a beautiful base on the Oxford Canal just minutes from the city centre. We have been welcoming guests aboard for over 30 years, and our passion for the waterways is as strong as ever.

We are one of Oxford's most highly regarded holiday companies, having won TripAdvisor Certificates of Excellence in 2017 and 2018 and receiving five-star ratings from hundreds of guests across every review platform.

Our base

We operate from Combe Road Wharf, Oxford OX2 6BL — a peaceful, easily accessible spot just off the Botley Road, with free parking available for the duration of your holiday. We are approximately 1.5 miles from Oxford city centre and a short taxi or bus ride from the railway station.

Our team

College Cruisers is run by Carys and her family. Our small, dedicated team knows every inch of the Oxford Canal and will give you a thorough and friendly briefing before you set off. We genuinely love what we do, and we think it shows.

The Oxford Canal

The Oxford Canal runs 77 miles from Oxford to Coventry, passing through some of England's most beautiful countryside — market towns, ancient villages, waterside pubs and rolling meadows. It is one of the most popular canals in the country, and one of the most rewarding for first-time boaters.

📞 Questions? Call us on 01865 554343 — we love to chat about what's possible on the canal.

  • Pets are welcome on selected boats — please ask when booking.
  • Maximum party size must not exceed the boat's stated sleeping capacity.

  • College Cruisers reserves the right to refuse hire or terminate a holiday where these conditions are not observed.
What to Bring

One of the joys of a narrowboat holiday is how little you need to bring. The boat is fully equipped — here's our recommended packing list.

Clothing

  • Layers — canal weather can change quickly, even in summer. A warm fleece and a waterproof jacket are essential.
  • Old shoes or wellies — towpaths and lock sides can be muddy. Bring footwear you don't mind getting dirty.
  • Non-slip shoes — important for moving around the boat safely.
  • Casual, comfortable clothes for everyday wear on the canal.
  • Swimwear if you plan to use the swimming holes or lidos along the route.

Bedding & bathroom

  • Bed linen and pillow cases are provided for all fixed beds.
  • Towels — please bring your own. Bath towels and beach towels.
  • Toiletries and personal hygiene items.

Food & drink

  • We recommend doing a main food shop before departure — the nearest supermarkets are a short drive or taxi from our base.
  • The canal passes many excellent village shops and farm shops where you can top up along the way.
  • Cooking equipment, pots, pans and utensils are all provided on board.

Other essentials

  • Waterproof bags or dry bags for valuables.
  • Sun cream — you'll be surprised how much time you spend on deck.
  • A good book or two — canal life is wonderfully relaxing.
  • Binoculars for wildlife spotting.
  • A portable Bluetooth speaker if you enjoy music on deck.

Useful apps & guides

  • Canal Planner or Waterway Routes — for route planning and lock information.
  • CRT Waterways — for live stoppages, locks and sanitary station locations.
  • We provide paper maps and our own route notes — but these apps are a helpful complement.
📦 Don't over-pack. Storage on a narrowboat is comfortable but compact — a medium holdall or soft bag per person works better than large wheeled suitcases.
Canal Pubs Guide

One of the great pleasures of the Oxford Canal is the string of excellent waterside pubs along its length. Here are our favourites — all accessible by boat, most with good moorings directly outside or nearby.

Heading north from Oxford

The Plough, WolvercoteA short trip from base. Lovely garden, good food, welcoming atmosphere. Popular mooring.
The Boat Inn, ThruppA classic canalside pub right on the towpath north of Kidlington. Excellent real ales.
The Wise Alderman, KidlingtonGood stopping point near Kidlington with a large mooring opposite.
The Rock of Gibraltar, EnslowA gem of a rural pub with direct canal moorings. Superb food and a fantastic atmosphere.
The Whately Hall, BanburyIn the heart of Banbury after passing through the famous locks. Good food and accommodation.
The Reindeer, BanburyOne of Banbury's most historic pubs, a short walk from the canal moorings in town.
The Brasenose, CropredyA favourite destination for Oxford Canal boaters. Beautiful village, great pub. About 3 days from base.
The Fenny Compton ArmsIn the village just above the Fenny Compton tunnel stretch. Quiet, traditional and highly recommended.

Mooring tips

  • Most canalside pubs have 48-hour visitor moorings — more than enough for an overnight stay.
  • Arrive by early afternoon in peak season to be sure of a mooring spot.
  • Always check CRT notices for any mooring restrictions before travelling.
  • We include our personal mooring notes and pub recommendations in your departure pack.
🍺 Our full departure pack includes an expanded pubs guide with distances, lock counts and our team's personal recommendations for each destination.
